AACPS CONDUCTING SIXTH INTERNATIONAL PARENT AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Office of School and Family Partnerships is looking for candidates for the sixth International Parent and Community Leadership Academy (IPCLA), which begins March 2, 2016.  Candidates must be born outside of the United States and/or speak a language other than English at home.

The six-week academy is aimed at improving communication between AACPS and international families and diversifying the pool of leaders in schools and the community who can better support the academic achievement of English Language Learners. Meetings will be held at Annapolis Middle School, located at 1399 Forest Drive in Annapolis.

“These academies have been a tremendous success and have greatly expanded knowledge of the workings of our school system among international parents,” said Teresa Tudor, AACPS’ Senior Manager of School and Family Partnerships. “We have also learned a tremendous amount from those who have participated, and are eager to learn even more with this class.”

Participants will identify and discuss challenges facing international students and their families, gain a better understanding of AACPS programs and initiatives, learn about the responsibilities of the Board of Education, and outline methods for better communication with international families. Participation is free and sessions will be held each Wednesday from March 2 through April 12.  Participants will graduate in front of the Board of Education on May 4.

More information, including an application form (in multiple languages), can be obtained by contacting Laura Gardner at 443-624-8607 or lmgardner@aacps.org.
